Abstract:

Solvent extraction technology has been effectively applied for recovery and separation of a variety of metals and now plays a very significant role in hydrometallurgy and waste water treatment.

Acidic organophosphorus compounds have been widely studied as extractants for several metals, and have been shown to exhibit a good extraction. bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid(abbreviated as D2EHPA or simply HL) has been revealed to be an successful extractant in hydrometallurgical processes for the purification of divalent metals such us copper, cobalt, nickel and zinc.

The solvent extraction of copper(II) and cobalt(II) from sulfate medium using di(2-ethylhexy1) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA, HL) has been investigated. The influence of the following parameters was studied: the equilibrium pH, the concentration of the extractant and the nature of diluent.

The stoichiometry of the extracted species of copper(II) in the organic phase have been found to be CuL22HL and CuL2 in  nonpolar and polar solvents  respectively.

¶            According to the nature of the solvent, the extraction of copper(II) by D2EHPA decreased in the order: 1-octanol > cyclohexane > isobutyl-methyl keton > carbon tetrachloride > dichloromethane > chloroform  ~ toluene.

The stoichiometry of the extracted species of cobalt(II)in the organic phase have been found to be CoL22HL and CoL2 in  nonpolar and polar solvents  respectively.

¶            According to the nature of the solvent, the extraction of cobalt(II) by D2EHPA decreased in the order:

1-octanol > cyclohexane >  dichloromethane> carbon tetrachloride ~ toluene >  isobutyl-methyl keton > chloroform.

The stoichiometry of the extracted species of nickel(II) in the organic phase have been found to be NiL22HL and NiL2 in  nonpolar and polar solvents  respectively.

The extraction constants are evaluated for the different diluents
